Canvass for Rent Stabilization!

Canvass for Rent Stabilization!

TBA
Over the past three years, Providence has seen some of the highest average rent increases in the country. The average asking rent for a 2-bedroom apartment in Providence is now $2600. As a result, our community is getting priced out. Young people are moving away because they can no longer afford to live here. Evictions and homelessness rates are increasing. Meanwhile, the corporate landlords are raking in profits. What are we going to do about it? We're helping to build a movement to make Providence affordable for all!  Our City Council is going to vote soon on a proposal for Rent Stabilization, which would put a limit on the amount by which landlords can raise the rent. The good news is that many City Councilors support the proposal. But the bad news is, several of them are still undecided. We need to make sure they hear from us, the people of Providence, that they must vote yes and stop the rent hikes. We're holding a series of weekend canvasses to get the community engaged in the fight for stabilized rents. Come out and join us - all are welcome! We'll do a quick training, then we'll partner up to knock doors and talk to community members about Rent Stabilization. No canvassing experience necessary. Come on out and help us make the city we love more affordable!

How We Win: Our Vision of Change

We believe that housing is a human right, and that our state and local governments must take action to ensure that every Rhode Islander has the safe and dignified housing they deserve. That's why we are fighting to stabilize the cost of rent, to build permanently affordable social housing, and to protect renters from unjust treatment by their corporate landlords.

Making these policy goals a reality requires building a working-class mass movement of organized tenants taking on and winning big fights with their exploitative corporate landlords. That's why we are organizing the Rhode Island Tenants Union, a statewide organization of tenants who are fighting to ensure that all tenants have a say over their housing conditions. When tenants stand and fight together, we can win the protections and stability that we need and deserve.

In order to win our vision, we:

  • ORGANIZE at the local level -- neighborhood by neighborhood -- to build power across the state;

  • MOBILIZE ordinary people who have never thought of themselves as political organizers;

  • EMPOWER members with the knowledge, skills, and relationships needed to become effective agents of change;

  • enact a CULTURE of solidarity across difference, developing new leaders, and building community power.
